Changing Lives Through Education

[00:03] [CHANGING LIVES THROUGH EDUCATION]

[00:05] It's incredibly fulfilling watching a student realize their own potential.

[00:09] To see them begin to believe in their own abilities, and to truly understand the importance of continuing their education.

[00:16] [I CAN CHANGE LIVES THROUGH MY WORK]

[00:19] It's not always easy to see the impact you're having as an educator, but here we see it every day. The California Community Colleges system is unlike any other you will find.

[00:29] We have rebuilt our community colleges to help our students overcome the obstacles typically associated with higher education, and remove the barriers for historically marginalized student groups to create the ideal place to take that next first step to unlocking their full potential.

[00:45] These changes are having a direct and immediate impact on the lives of students from an array of communities, identities, and backgrounds each and every day.

[00:54] California community colleges are where lives change, and as an educator, you will be an important part of that change.

[01:01] [Francisco C. Rodriguez, Ph.D.] [Former Chancellor, Los Angeles Community College District]

[01:03] My father was a factory worker and my mother worked in a laundromat. So this idea that a first generation English language learner from a working class family in the inner city could go to college and not just go to college, but feel supported, embraced, and ultimately nurtured in such a way that now I do this, for others is a pretty powerful feeling with the single goal of student success is something that keeps me inspired.

[01:32] And the idea that education is an emancipatory activity. The first thing I would say is that you are welcomed here.

[01:41] We invite, embrace people from every walk of life, every background, every language, every history.

[01:48] You want to be a part of something that's big. You want to be a change agent. You want to feel like you're part of a system whose sole purpose is the success of students then the California community college system is the place to be.

[02:02] [Teresa Aldredge] [Counselor and Instructor, Cosumnes River College]

[02:04] I see the value in working at a California community college as making a difference in our students lives. I go to work every day for my students. I'm there for them. I love my students. I love what I do.

[02:19] And if you're going to work at a community college, you've got to love that experience. And it's a wonderful experience being able to make a difference in someone's lives.

[02:29] I work with exceptional colleagues, amazing leadership and those individuals make it worthwhile to come to work every day. I've been doing it for 32 years now.

[02:42] [Trajan Robinson] [Graduate, California Community College]

[02:43] It was really important for me to have purpose and I have a strong why. And then to also have mentors help guide me so whomever that may be, a teacher, my boss at work, or even the administrator that saw me doing a good job and now wants to speak to me became all those individuals.

[02:59] And it became like this cohesive effort towards myself. I think the most pertinent one is safe black space.

[03:05] At a California community college, I met a counselor through my work. She was a psychologist. We ended up, like, striking up sort of like a friendship. And she involved me with this nonprofit in Sacramento that worked with Black Mental Health.

[03:18] And I've been involved with them for the last 2 or 3 years, and those were because of connections I made at a California community college through professors who were involved with the capital.
