Career Tools and Tips

Prepare examples that align with the job description

When preparing for interviews or application prompts, specificity is essential. Reviewing the job description and preparing examples that directly align with the listed duties helps create clearer, more effective responses throughout the hiring process.

Stand out as a faculty finalist

If you are a finalist for a faculty position, preparing a brief packet for the final interview committee can be helpful. This may include an equity-minded lesson plan or assignment, along with student or peer evaluations. Thoughtful preparation can clearly demonstrate teaching philosophy and commitment to student success.

Did you know - California Community College governance

In 1988, California passed AB 1725, establishing participatory governance structures across community colleges.

What does this mean for hiring? Your interview panel may include faculty, staff, managers, and students from different departments. Not all members will be experts in your specific field — so it's important to be thorough in your application and interviews.

Clear communication helps committees understand your qualifications and the value you bring.

Career tip - Tailor your resume for community college roles

Career Tip: Tailor Your Resume for Community College Roles

Community college hiring committees may include faculty, staff, and students from different backgrounds. Make sure your resume highlights more than just technical skills. Show your ability to work with diverse groups, support collaboration, and adapt to changing needs.

These qualities reflect the values of California Community Colleges and help your application stand out.
