Becoming Part of Something Bigger

[00:02] [BECOMING PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER]

[00:06] California's community colleges are the largest provider of workforce training in the nation.

[00:13] [I CAN TRAIN CALIFORNIA'S UP-AND-COMING WORKFORCE]

[00:16] With more than 200 career education programs ranging from health care to climate action to cybersecurity and engineering, to name a few. It's here that a diverse student body with special talents and different goals, learn through hands on training and get the skills they need to find a career path that not only pays well but is in demand.

[00:35] It's just one of the many ways we offer opportunities for all students, and the flexibility to pursue their interests and overcome obstacles typically associated with higher education. Taught by educators and industry professionals alike.

[00:48] Our system also provides flexibility for those looking for teaching opportunities outside the traditional classroom experience.

[00:56] [Ahmed (Rasheed) Aden, M.S.] [Counselor and Instructor, San Diego City College]

[00:57] This is the only place I've ever felt like lets me be my authentic self. When we're growing up, we aspire to be things we can see. And so being a black male, we're overly represented in entertainment, obviously, and sports, rarely do you see that portrayal in education.

[01:19] It's important for them to know that they can be a professor. They can be a counselor, they can be a dean. They can even be a president of an entire college.

[01:28] [Treshawn Weatherspoon] [Graduate, California Community College]

[01:30] Exposure is so important not just for African-American students, but also for the Asian students, Hispanic students, all cultures. Exposure is very important. You know, our youth can't be what they can't see. So you apply for the job and you get the job.

[01:46] You can make a huge impact on that campus because it'll let students know, hey, you know what? Maybe I should apply and come back and work here. Or, you know, if I can be in that person's shoes and do what they're doing. So don't sleep on yourself.

[01:59] You know, have confidence, believe in yourself. Make sure you have a positive mindset. Because that's where success starts. First is with your mindset and knowing your purpose and knowing your why.

[02:10] [Suzanne De May] [Professor of Accounting, Sacramento City College]

[02:11] I've been teaching at the California Community College System for over 20 years. My favorite part are the students. It truly is. They're just they're everything. You know, you go into the classroom, we're the professor thinking, okay, I'm going to come in. I'm teaching them. I have this whole group of students I'm going to teach and never fail.

[02:28] They teach us. I mean, at the end of the semester, you're just so filled. Like my heart is filled every semester. Oh, see I'm going to start to cry thinking about them. They're just amazing. And their, their stories.

[02:42] Their background and the things that they've gone through and that they're still there wanting to better themselves and to get this education to have a better life. It's just amazing and it's so rewarding. I just that's why I love it.

[02:57] I mean, don't tell anybody, but I could you probably pay me half of what I'm getting paid. I'd still do it just because I love it so much. But don't tell anybody.
